What is TerpAMA?

Who We Are, Meetings, Professional Events, Social Events, Trips, Community Service

Who We Are

We are the award-winning American Marketing Association of the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, College Park. We are the official undergraduate student society for the marketing department. With over 150 members, terpAMA is one of the largest, as well as one of the most active, student organizations in the Smith School.

As a collegiate chapter of the national American Marketing Association, we are one of the only nationally-affiliated clubs on campus. We actively seek ways to better enrich our members by providing them with tools to pursue not only education, but also application of the professional skills they learn about.  We host events that foster networking skills, as well as real-world marketing experiences that often times lead to internships and jobs.  Last year, at the  national AMA conference in New Orleans, terpAMA was recognized as among the top 16 collegiate chapters in the country.

Plus...we are overall very awesome.

Meetings

Wednesdays during the academic year, terpAMA holds company presentation events. For these events, we invite representatives from select companies to come and speak about their real world marketing experiences as well as any “case study” situations that they have experienced. These meetings provide companies with a special opportunity to speak to 50 to 150 attentive, motivated, top marketing students while our members get the benefit of valuable face-time with company representatives.

Additionally, these meetings provide students the opportunity to learn more about the marketing industry and companies that interest them. After speakers finish their presentations, students are given an opportunity to meet with company representatives face-to-face to discuss their personal interests. These interactions are an excellent way for companies to establish valuable relationships with students, resulting in internships and lasting connections.

Professional Events

Every year, terpAMA also hosts professional events that directly enhance our members’ knowledge of the business world. In the past, we have hosted highly successful professional events, such as our annual “Bookbag to Briefcase” etiquette dinner, where companies such as NVR/Ryan Homes, Accenture, and Enterprise Rent-a-Car employees educate our members on proper dining etiquette as well as proper business fashion.

This dinner also involves breakout sessions in smaller groups so the company representatives can more intimately discuss skills such as networking and resumes to help our members build a base for interviewing and career fairs.

Our “MBA Panel Discussion” informed and prepared students for an academic life beyond their undergraduate education.  We invited professors and current MBA students to discuss their experiences in the job market, as well as tips for recent graduates.

Social Events

Between company presentation events, we hold social events where students can interact with each other outside of a formal business environment. For this upcoming academic year, we are planning to increase the amount of social events significantly. Building a strong social base is an integral part of terpAMA.  Not only will we grow as a group, but members will be given the opportunity to form relationships that will strongly benefit them when it comes time to search for jobs and internships.  Companies are always welcome to have a presence at our social events, providing unique opportunities for those representatives to reach out to students.

Trips

TerpAMA takes two major trips each year. In the fall, we travel to New York City to visit prestigious firms in the heart of the Big Apple. In our past trips to New York City, students gained fun and educational experiences by visiting firms such as Donna Karan, NBA, MediaVest, AOL/Time-Warner, and Marriott Times Square. Not to brag, but we also saw numerous celebrities including: John Cusack, Nicole Ritchie, Donald Trump, and more!

Every spring, we attend the AMA National Convention in New Orleans.  This trip is often the highlight of the year for those who attend.  We are given the opportunity to interact with other AMA chapters across the country and get to know them not only as fellow AMA members, but also on a social level. The trip also unites our officers and launches our brainstorming process for the upcoming academic year.  It’s a fun trip to the Big Easy with your friends!

Community Service

Our organization believes very strongly in staying active with charities and making a positive impact in our local community. In the past, we have worked, very successfully, with many nonprofit organizations such as “Relay for Life”, “Toys for Tots”, “Donors for Life”, and “My Sister’s Circle”. Working with My Sister’s Circle gave our members the rewarding experience of exposing 25 disadvantaged Baltimore teenage girls to college life. During this event, entitled “Future Women in Business: Today’s Girls, Tomorrow’s Leaders,” the girls participated in a series of workshops related to setting goals, developing leadership skills, and exploring possibilities for the future. TerpAMA members led activities such as creating a mock resume, applying skills and interests to a potential career, and a tour of the campus.

This year, terpAMA will be working with the town of Chevy Chase on the Chevy Chase Challenge, a project in a nearby town of Maryland that is focused on reducing carbon dioxide emissions in their neighborhood.  terpAMA will be conducting research on marketing opportunities for this project, as well as holding a logo design contest.  For more information on how you can get involved in this project with terpAMA, be sure to check out the Community Service page on our website.
